Austria’s mass COVID testing shifted from paper queues to an end-to-end digital flow—QR check-in, on-site validation, automated results, and tamper-proof certificates via SMS/WhatsApp. Integrated with existing systems and auto-reporting to authorities, it scaled to 500,000+ tests/day and cut per-test time from ~15 minutes to ≈1 minute, reducing touchpoints from 3–5 to one.

summary
challenge
During the pandemic, very large numbers of people had to be tested every day. Paper forms, queues, and duplicate data entry caused delays, errors, and a logistics burden that became hard to manage. In Austria, at the peak, well over 500,000 tests per day were processed—the systems reached their limits.
solution
We replaced the paper process with an end-to-end digital flow: check-in via QR code with on-site validation, automated result processing, and tamper-proof certificates as PDFs sent via SMS/WhatsApp. The solution integrated with existing systems and automatically reported results to health and government databases.
impact
- Throughput per test: from ~15 min to ≈ 1 min
- Touchpoints: reduce from 3–5 to 1 only
- Authority reporting: automated, faster, and less error-prone
- Time per 1,000,000 tests
- Time used for testing and processing before: ~15 min/test
- Time used for testing and processing after: ~1 min/test
- Saved time per 1 Mio tests: ≈ 26.6 years
